Last year, store shelves around the world became barren of commonly known hand sanitizers and sanitizing products as the COVID-19 pandemic exploded around the globe. The sudden high and urgent demand resulted in manufacturers producing an unprecedented amount of hand sanitizers.
A recent Bloomberg report revealed that many of these major hand sanitizer brands contain high levels of benzene, which causes cancer. The World Health Organization labels benzene as toxic and carcinogenic as asbestos, which is the chemical responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide. Benzene has been linked to blood cancers such as leukemia. Using benzene topically is more toxic than inhaling cigarette smoke or being exposed to plastic manufacturing, which goes directly against the purpose of hand sanitizers: to protect health.
Many of these hand sanitizers were sold by Amazon and Target. What is even more alarming: many of the hand sanitizers identified in the study as having high levels of benzene are marketed specifically towards children.
It isn’t clear exactly how benzene entered the products, but it is possible it occurred during the alcohol purification products. The products reaching the shelf and in the hands of consumers was a direct result of lax quality check processes from these major brands due to the demand.
It is also unknown how many contaminated bottles have been sold, how many are still on shelves and in classrooms, and how many are still being used now. The only way to know for certain that these hand sanitizers are safe is to have each bottle tested, which is impossible at this point.
This comes just months after the FDA announced that many hand sanitizers that made their way to shelves contained methanol alcohol, which is poisonous when applied to the skin or inhaled and can lead to organ failure, blindness, and death.
