What are GMOs?

A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is a plant, animal or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology. These processes create unstable combinations of plant, animal and bacterial genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

4 Things You Should Know about GMOs

  1. They are everywhere - even in your cosmetics! Many ingredients derived from genetically modified crops such as corn, soy and canola are found in everyday items that we use regularly, like toothpaste.
  2. We don’t know the long-term health risks.Surprisingly there are no independent, long-term studies that show the results of how genetically modified plants, animals and other organisms affect human health.
  3. GMOs encourage superbugs and superweeds. Many genetically engineered crops are created to withstand high doses of pesticides, which has led to the proliferation of pesticide-resistant weeds and bugs. They can also harm helpful insects like bees and butterflies.
  4. They are threatening food security. GMO crops are replacing locally adapted crop varieties that are better suited for particular types of soils and climates, damaging the sustainability and resilience of local farms around the world.

How to Avoid GMOs

Genetic modification affects many of the products we consume on a daily basis, but you wouldn’t know since the US doesn’t require GMO labeling. Here are three ways to avoid GMOs:

  • Buying organic foods and products offers assurance against the risks of genetic engineering because genetically modified substances are prohibited in organic production.
  • Look for non-GMO certifications or research brands that do not use genetically modified ingredients — like us!
  • Eating more whole foods and staying away from non-organic processed foods will help you avoid GMOs and live a healthier life.

Non-GMO Toothpaste

Here are Dr. Brite we responsibly source our products from manufacturers that have non-GMO testing and/or are non-GMO verified by the Non-GMO Project. For example, our xylitol is purchased from a non-GMO verified manufacturer that produces the xylitol from fruit pulp/fibers, and our citric acid is derived from non-GMO sugar cane. We pay a significant premium for these ingredients because we refuse to compromise the quality of our toothpaste and our beliefs.
