Questions You're Afraid to Ask the Dentist - Answered!

It's not uncommon to be uncomfortable around or afraid of your dentist, which can make it difficult to ask questions. Fortunately, Dr. Brite co-founder and practicing dentist, Dr. Pooneh Ram has provided us with the answers to some of the questions you're too scared to ask.

Why are my teeth not as white as they used to be?

Over the years, by normal wear and tear you lose the protective, enamel coating of your teeth. When you only have a thin layer of enamel, the dentin (a yellow-tinged substance) becomes exposed. If you consume colored foods and drinks, the staining contributes to the discoloration of your teeth. Here are some great tips to help whiten your smile naturally.

How do I get rid of bad breath?

Odors can be caused by habits, health problems and certain foods, but it’s mostly due to excessive buildup of anaerobic oral bacteria. Thankfully, there is a solution for that. There are many natural toothpastes and mouth rinses that help foul-smelling breath by removing the odor-causing bacteria. Also brushing your tongue to make sure there is no remaining plaque will make a difference. Find out how to freshen your breath when you don't have a toothbrush handy.

Are dental x-rays safe?

Over ninety percent of dental x-rays are now digital, and are very safe. For example, if you fly from Los Angeles to San Francisco you are exposed to more x radiation than if you have a set of dental x-rays done. Many oral conditions, diseases and problems are diagnosed with the help of x-rays, as they are the best diagnostic tool in the industry.

What materials are used for dental restorations?

Depending on which dentist you visit, the materials used in dentistry in the US are extremely safe. Fillings are normally white, BPA-free plastic materials that are light cured. They are sturdy and long lasting. For full coverage restorations and crowns you have options of metal-free and porcelain, which are very hygienic and durable.

How often should I go to the dentist?

Twice a year, even if your mouth is in excellent condition. It's really all about prevention. Dentists are able to prevent more extensive, more invasive and expensive treatments if a problem is caught at earlier stages. You also need to get a professional dental cleaning every six months to prevent gum issues and tooth decay.
