Pregnancy Gingivitis Facts
A recent study has found that pregnant women are more likely to have moderate to severe gingivitis and may need regular care to maintain their oral health and help avoid adverse pregnancy outcomes.
The study, presented last month at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) meeting in Seoul, South Korea, also found that gingivitis is relatively stable in the late first and second trimester.
Sources estimate that fewer than 40 percent to almost 80 percent of pregnant women have gingivitis. Given the prevalence of the condition, this study attempted to focus on the need for better oral health care during pregnancy.
Gum Disease in Pregnant Women
Even though gum disease is a common oral issue for adults, it's more common in pregnant women due to hormonal changes that make them extra sensitive to the bacteria in plaque.
When gum disease is in its early stages, it’s known as gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums.
If gingivitis goes untreated, it can develop into periodontitis, a more serious condition that’s been associated with heart attacks, strokes, and premature birth in pregnant women.
A few signs and symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis include red, swollen or bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, and difficulty or pain when chewing.
The good news is that pregnancy gingivitis is easy to identify and can be naturally prevented or treated with proper oral care practices.
